HATUEY: FIRST REBEL MARTYR OF THE AMERICAS

Only 11 years after Columbus “discovered” America, an indigenous leader and his followers rose up against the invading Spaniards, making him the 1^st Rebel of the Americas.

 

Today we tell the story of Hatuey, a chieftain of the Tainos, who defied the tides of history, and became a symbol of indigenous resistance in the Caribbean.

 

While his name is well-known throughout the Caribbean, his story is not so well-known everywhere else.

 

Let’s change that.
